Brown Onguko PhD

Associate Research Scientist | African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC)

Brown is Associate Research Scientist in the Education and Youth Empowerment Unit, within the Human Development Theme, at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC). He has experience in design, development and implementation of research and professional development programs through blended learning; teacher professional
development; and use of appropriate technologies in learning. He is currently setting up education and technology research program at APHRC.

He is developing research concepts on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education in Africa; and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education.
He is a holder of a PhD in educational technology from the University of Calgary (2012). He also holds a Master of Science degree in educational and training systems design from the University of Twente, Master of Education degree in philosophy of education from Kenyatta University, and Bachelor’s degree in education from Kenyatta University.

He previously worked as a senior education program specialist at the Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) in the Tusome early grade literacy program. In this role, he among other responsibilities, was the Team Leader of Tusome early grade literacy pilot implementation in Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2018. He also worked as assistant professor at Aga Khan
University. Apart from teaching technology integration courses in education, he also led a research group on educational technology that brought together partners from Aga Khan university, Cambridge University and University of Calgary. He played facilitator, panelist, and moderator roles during the Digital Opportunities Trust unconference that was held at
Kenyatta University in May 2013. He also worked as Assistant Director of Education at the Ministry of Education, Nairobi, Kenya; as senior lecturer at the Kenya Education Staff Institute and assistant lecturer/tutor at Asumbi teachers college.
